Arming yourself with a rich understanding for home-care techniques, natural remedies and restorative nutrition in times of illness can be the difference between a trip to Emergency or not, or a course of antibiotics which undoubtedly offer immediate relief, however may have long-term consequences.

As a Mama, enrolling in local workshops and taking courses run by qualified, licensed health-care providers has been extremely supportive in my journey as a parent;

Doing so has expanded my knowledge about common childhood illnesses + how to navigate them with safe, effective, traditionally-used natural therapies.  Or even “old-fashioned” home care methods like The Wet Sock Treatment for fever, which has worked for our children every single time.

Homeopathic Medicine  +  Herbal Remedies  +  Therapeutic Nutrition

Over the years, learning to support my kids naturally through typical childhood maladies has been rather rewarding; where I used to feel nervous, helpless or overwhelmed during time of illness, I now feel centered and confident while using such remedies to encourage healing.

Don’t get me wrong though please, holding a sick baby can be extremely humbling and in the depths of our most raw + vulnerable moments of motherhood I also believe in the importance of reaching out to the caregivers we trust.

For us it has been our Naturopathic Doctor; she has been our primary-care Doctor for 13+ years of these years, not once have we needed a prescription for antibiotics or used over-the-counter medicine.  

Despite some of the troubling press coverage as of late, and what’s been demonized about the ‘alternative’ healthcare industry, I wish to tell you how thorough our exams are and how seriously our visits are taken.  Beyond that, my values for supporting the body naturally whenever possible, are honored within the Naturopathic model for medicine.

Fever Believer! 

(Not to be confused with Bieber Fever)

A fever is an important biological mechanism of the body which serves to protect you, however due to some slick marketing the role of a fever has become greatly misunderstood – and ultimately feared.

.

The Facts:

.

  • A fever mobilizes your immune system – this produces more white blood cells, antibodies, and a protein called interferon, all of which work to protect your body against harmful microorganisms.
  • By raising your body’s temperature – a fever makes it harder for invading bacteria and viruses to survive and flourish.
  • The higher your core body temperature is – the harder it is for harmful microorganisms to survive in your body.
  • When we interfere with a fever, we interfere with the natural healing process.

What We Do:

.

  • I believe in the value of letting children spike their fever – when necessary, I bring it down naturally vs artificially with the following;
  • Homeopathic Medicine – with Homeopathy, often what you are treating is an infection somewhere in the body rendering the fever unnecessary.
  • The Wet Sock Treatment – a home remedy which stimulates the immune system + draws circulation down through the body.
  • Feed a Cold, Starve a Fever – One of the greatest threats during a fever is dehydration; keep electrolytes up, and ensure your child is taking in A LOT of liquid!  Breastmilk, tea, water, bone broth, juice (this is the only time I use juice) and so on.

This list is ONLY a simplified + basic explanation for how we handle fevers in our home; certainly, a fever can warrant more complex attention and care.  

Although I’m completely comfortable using the noted healing modalities (have used these exclusively for 13+ years), I am not properly qualified to direct you on the how-to’s! 

The essence of this post is simply to encourage all Mamas + Daddies to empower themselves with a deeper understanding for childhood illness + home-care methods which feel appropriate to their belief systems for medicine, and also their comfort levels for care.
